Reflections on a Posting: HE Adrian O’Neill, Ambassador of Ireland, will reflect on his long diplomatic career, including his most recent and rather lively 5 year posting in London. His first external talk when he arrived in London was at the Dining Club.

Time & Location

Savile Club , 69 Brook St, London W1K 4ER, UK

Description

Adrian O’Neill was Secretary General at Áras an Uachtaráin to both Presidents Mary McAleese and Michael D. Higgins from 2010 - 2014. In this role, he assisted in the State Visit of HM Queen Elizabeth ll to Ireland in May 2011 and the return State Visit of President Higgins to Britain in April 2014.

After graduating from TCD, Adrian had served in the Dept.of Foreign Affairs, Dublin, before working in Irish Embassies in Madrid and Washington and the Consulate in Boston.  He then returned to the Dublin DFA to serve finally as Director General (Anglo-Irish Division) before his appointment (as above) as Secretary General for two succeeding Presidents of Ireland.

Three years after completing this high profile job, in 2017, Adrian was appointed to his current position as Ireland’s Ambassador in London.   At that time, Brexit was set to dominate the political discourse between Britain and Ireland.  Adrian has fulfilled his diplomatic duties with great skill during one of the most crucial periods for the two countries in recent memory - and plans to retire later this year, deservedly so!
